Harriot Bevan

An appealing sampler, this was made by Harriot Bevan, aged 11 and living in Lifton, a town in Devonshire, England. She stitched alphabets and a version of a quotation from The Imitation of Christ, Book II, Chapter 1, advising trust in the grace of God.
As happens occasionally on samplers, a few lines of text continued into the right margin area, interrupting the border in a charming way.
Harriot was born in 1820 to Joseph and Ann Bevan. She married John Ball, a blacksmith, and they remained in Lifton where the 1861 census indicates that they had five children.
The sampler was worked in silk on linen and is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted and is in a molded and black painted frame.
